Miami Heat aren’t as young as you think

Clippers are the oldest and Trailblazers the youngest team in the NBA.

Surprisingly, after all the summer roster changes, the average of Miami Heat’s training camp roster is 26.7, which is higher than the 26.0 average age of all NBA teams heading into pre-season. The Clippers are the oldest team at 29.4, while the Trailblazers the youngest at 24.1.

The youngest teams are short on experience, while veteran teams tend to be on the wrong side the peak-performance curve. The Heat have a nice blend of being less than a year above the average, but having more reps than most teams.

The Clippers, at 29.4 years-old with 8.3 years experience, and Cavaliers, at 29.2 years-old with 7.7 years experience, stand out as the senior teams of the league by being almost two years older than the 28th oldest team.

Surprisingly the Trailblazers are the youngest team, followed by three teams in the Heat’s Eastern Conference division. Miami’s faster pace offense may not work when 12 teams in their division are younger than them.

Only three teams, the Bulls, Clippers and Suns don’t have have plans to cut players from their training day rosters. Six teams, the 76ers, Nuggets, Magic, Bucks, Rockets and Heat have 4 or 5 players they have to release for further seasoning and as insurance policies for unforeseen events later on.

The Heat may be younger than last season, but 23 teams are younger than them. They may have to rely more on their experience than speed alone.
